Some of you may know that I originally planned to hike the PCT in 2021 after finishing my bachelors degree. Because of the pandemic we all know about, it was not possible to do so and as my hope to go hiking from Mexico to Canada faded more and more as 2020 came to an end, I had to look for a plan B! Luckily, I spent years (yes, years) to research and buy outdoor equipment from my small student budget for my PCT hike. So if I can’t go hiking overseas, why not hike in the EU? Because I had around 2 months of time before my masters study in Vienna started, I decided to hike the Slovenian Mountain Trail, using all the gear I accumulated and tested in the past years.
I definitely do not have all the high-end ultralight gear you could possibly get, but it made me hike 650 km through Slovenia (and would possibly also make me hike from Mexico to Canada). For me, these pieces of gear work very well.
Down below I inserted my gear list for the SMT. You’ll find the weight of the item and an estimated price. At the very bottom, there is a nice pie chart of the weight contribution. My overall pack (base-) weight was approximately 7kg, but I am aiming to skate this down at least one kg until my PCT hike.
